Gap years are really a really exciting prospect. The idea of getting out there and experiencing the world after being confined to a school room can be so liberating. It can also help to clear your head, and get you ready for fresh challenges when you continue back on your path, whether that is in education, work or a mixture of two. If you are very much set on a gap year, then you really only need to follow these handy three tips to make it the time of your life.

Decide and plan

Perhaps the most important decision to make is what to do on your gap year and why. There are many opportunities out there depending on what you would like to do. If you wish to let off some steam, travel and just work to pay your way then try to confirm a job before departing. Alternatively you may wish to take on charity work abroad. There are dedicated companies and charities that arrange projects like this such as 'Lattitude', which can be found online, but be careful! Some of these come with a cost attached to cover your expenses.

Be prepared

It is important to check your health before taking such a long break away, as this may not be available in other countries. Make sure that you have sufficient insurance to cover all of your needs. It will differ from holiday insurance as this does not cover working! Inoculation injections and making sure that all of your medications are well in stock and up-to-date are crucial to stop you falling ill. Also make lists! Being without something important could be a nightmare.

Keep Safe

Make sure to be prepared of how different life will be in another country. Remember to keep aware of water and foods which can be less safe than in the UK. Also plan how you will keep your money and belongings safe and insured. Travel Cards can be good for this. Also have a contingency plan should you get into a sticky situation, and plan to stay in touch with people at home so that they know that you are safe.
